High Impact Research for Lithium Ion Batteries using Atom Probe Tomography

Wednesday, August 4, 2021

Lithium-ion technology dominates batteries at the heart of everything from smartphones to energy storage. Battery technology holds the key to transitioning away from fossil fuel dependence and is set to play a greater role in the coming decade.

To take lithium-ion batteries to the next level, researchers need to understand their chemistry and the role of trace elements that improve batteries’ performance. Visualizing the atoms help, but that’s easier said than done. Even the most powerful electron microscopes are approaching their limit in imaging how lithium and dopants distribute at the atomic scale.

Atom Probe Tomography (APT) helps scientists reach that next level. APT has equal detection sensitivity to elements over the periodic table. Single atom detection and true 3-dimensional special resolution at sub-nanometer scale are achieved by the high sensitivity delay-line detector. The state-of-art analysis and data processing software, Atom Probe Suite, allows users to explore the microstructure atom by atom.

In this webinar, Dr. Yimeng Chen of CAMECA will demonstrate how APT can impact the future development of lithium-ion technology. APT analysis was performed on two types of modern NMC Li-based cathode materials for comparison. Sample preparation for cathode powders, correlative analysis on the same particle will be presented.
